Kolonna divisional secretariat is located at the south-eastern end of Ratnapura district. It consists of 144 villages and 29 grama Niladhari Divisions. Climatically belongs to humid and inter-central zone. The Sinharaja forest is located on the western border of the division and Areporuwa River which starts in the vicinity is also a major river that passes through this division. Apart from this, Velewatu River and Hulanda Oya can be mentioned as main rivers. Also, the headwaters of the two main rivers of Sri Lanka, Gingage and Nilwala, which flow through Matara and Galle districts in the southern province, is the Gongala Kadu peak which belongs to this division. Due to the historically important Maduwanwela Caves and Waulpana Limestone Caves, which are the gifts of the natural environment, this area has attracted attention not only in this country but also at home and abroad. Kolonna division, which is considered one of the most difficult divisional secretariat in Ratnapura district, is located at a distance of 106 km from Ratnapura city. The people of the division are currently grappling with modern technical tools to increase national production. Also, tea cultivation is successfully carried out in Ullinduawawa, Boraluwageaina, Buthkanda, Ittakanda, Buluthota, Ranhotikanda, Heneggegoda, Koppakanda, Dapane, Morawadiya. Cumin and pepper, which are minor export crops, are successfully planted in other GN Divisions. In addition to minor export crop cultivation in Kolonna, Maduwanwela, Nandanagama, Areporuwa, and Buluthota GN Divisions, paddy cultivation is also done. Agriculture is the livelihood of many people.

Climate and Rainfall

In some areas of the Kolonna divisional secretariat where wet and intermediate climate characteristics are found, the arid climate characteristics of Hambantota district are also seen. Some parts belonging to the south-western borders of the division belong to the high central climate. If we take it as grama niladhari divisions, there is a winter climate in Ittakanda, Buluthota, and Ulliduawawa. The Sinharaja forest located on the western border has been affected by climate change in this area. These areas receive constant rain throughout most of the year.

But in the lower part of the Bulutota mountain range, lowland areas such as Walakada, Habbeliara, and Kampane also have the arid climate characteristics of the Hambantota district. This is due to the geographical location and the environmental changes that have occurred in modern days.
